Tony Woodland

Managing Director

 

Tony Woodland was born in 1961 in Croydon and was educated and lived in the South London/Surrey area until his early thirties. He worked for Lloyds Bank in the City of London and for Westminster City Council, before he started working for the family care home business, firstly in Sutton and later in Guildford. During his employment he studied and qualified for an HNC in Business Studies and a CIM diploma in Marketing.

 

When the business was sold and his father relocated to Guernsey and set up a care home business there, Tony joined him on the island a few years later.

 

Tony is married to Corinna and has one son and two step-children. He loves to travel and likes to keep fit and active. He has an affinity with Spain, where his mum was born and resides, as do his two brothers. He enjoys various sports, especially golf, tennis and padel tennis, which he recently helped introduce to the island.

Cathy Bailey

Group Nursing Director

 

Cathy is local, she qualified as a registered nurse in Guernsey 35 years ago. Initially working at the Princess Elizabeth on medical and surgical wards, she then transferred to the community before undertaking further training. She worked at the King Edward V11 hospital on the general wards specialising in older persons care before running the Day Assessment Unit.


In addition to her nursing qualifications Cathy was a Nursing Officer at St John, she holds a degree in Professional Practice, is an Assessor for NVQ, she is an active member of Soroptimist International and is current Chair of the Guernsey Care Managers Association.


Cathy has worked at Summerland almost since its inception in 1988, employed initially on the bank staff and then as Training Manager, Deputy Matron then Matron from 1997 until 2019.


Though not clinically based, Cathy is responsible for developing policies for the group, she arranges viewings for families, assesses residents coming into the home and provides clinical advice and support to all three homes.

Summerland is a family affair, as Cathy is married to Paul (Financial Director) and their daughter Charley is the Financial Administrator. Cathy also has another daughter Samantha who is an avid traveller. Cathy’s parents used to run a farm locally where her love affair with dogs began. She is the proud owner of Cali her Golden Retriever and when she’s not walking her, Cathy can usually be found in her garden.

Paul was born in 1960 in Llanelli, West Wales and spent his early career working in the Finance department for the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council whilst studying mercantile law at the Gwent College of Further Education before moving into the hospitality industry managing hotels in Cowbridge and Usk. He moved to Guernsey in 1986 to manage Summerland House Hotel.

 

In 1987 Summerland House was acquired by David Woodland and Paul continued to help run it as a Nursing Home, where he has been working for the past 34 years.
Paul is a member of the National & Guernsey Care Managers Association, ACCA & Associate of the Chartered Management Institute.

 

Paul is married to Cathy and has two adult daughters Charley and Samantha. He is an avid sports fan, especially Chelsea FC and Scarlets Rugby Club. He is proud to be a Vice President at Llanelli RFC and locally as a former player for Edmundson Irregulars Cricket Club. He also enjoys travel and playing golf.

Sue was married to Rex, who sadly died of cancer. She has two lovely children, Aearon, 28yrs old and Angela, 23yrs old. She remarried in 2018 to Tony and they live with 4 cats.

 

Sue started her nursing career in 1977 in Middlesbrough in the Northeast of England. She moved to Peterborough to train as a midwife and has over 44 years’ experience as a Registered General Nurse. Sue moved over to Guernsey in 1983, and has worked at the PEH, a private nursing home and then found her main job, working in Community, for over 22 years. Sue is a qualified District Nurse and Nurse Prescriber. While working on Community, Sue helped develop the Twilight Service, Night Service and forefronted the Rapid Response Team.


Her qualifications include: Certificate of Managing Health Services with the Open University.
Diploma of Higher Education Pathway: Post registration Studies with University of Greenwich.
Studies at degree level in Research, appreciation and application, Leadership in Practice, Teaching & Assessing in Practice, and mentorship Qualified NVQ A1 assessor.

Lisa Vahey

HR Administrator

 

Lisa was born in Bury, Lancashire but moved to Guernsey with her parents in 1981 so is now a fully qualified local. She was educated at Notre Dame Primary School, Guernsey Grammar School and went on to Trinity College Carmarthen (part of the University of South Wales) where she gained an BA Honours Degree in Theatre Studies.

 

She started at Summerland House in August 2015 as a Finance Administrator, but in 2019 decided to retrain as Human Resources Administrator. She has her Level 3 Certificate in HR Practices and started the Level 5 in January 2023. She is also one of the Home’s Mental Health First Aiders after attending the course with Guernsey Mind in 2020, with a refresher in 2023.

 

Outside of work, she takes care of her son, Ben, along with her husband Richard. When she gets some spare time, she likes to take walks with her family, sing, read, and enjoys building Star Wars Lego.

Charley Girard

Finance Administrator

Charley was born and raised in Guernsey and is the eldest daughter of Paul and Cathy. Educated at La Houguette Primary School and The Ladies College, she later attended the University of Winchester for one year where she was granted a Certificate of Higher Education in Primary Education before returning to Guernsey to pursue a career in Finance.

Between 2013 and 2020 she was employed at Cannon Asset Management Limited and worked her way up from Trainee to Senior Trust Administrator, qualifying as a Trust Estate Practitioner and awarded the STEP Diploma in International Trust Management.

In June 2020, she decided to change careers and made the brave decision to work under her parents’ management when she took up the role of Finance Administrator for Summerland House. Charley is primarily responsible for resident invoicing, paying suppliers, running the payroll and dealing with residents’ families on all financial matters.

In her spare time, Charley enjoys keeping fit at personal training, socialising with family and friends and holidaying with her husband, Matt.

Corinna is Guernsey born. She moved to America when she was 9 years of age and was educated there. Corinna always held Guernsey close to her heart and so decided to return to the Island in 1984. She is married to Tony and has two children and one stepson.

 

Corinna joined the company in 1998 as a Carer, she then progressed to Senior Carer, Care Manager and now a Director.

 

Her qualifications; Edexcel level 3 in Health and social Care (Adults), administration of medications, basic first aid and AED trained.

 

In her spare time- Corinna enjoys walking, swimming, cycle rides, gym classes and travel

Kelly MacDonald

Care Manager/Director

 

Kelly is Guernsey born and educated locally. She joined the company in 2004 where she gained the following qualifications: edexcel level 3 in Health and Social Care (Adults), edexcel level 3 in assessing vocational achievement, 12 certificates for completion of her level 5 Diploma in leadership for Health and Social Care and children and young people’s services (Adults residential Management) (England). She is also a qualified ergocoach providing training for the home and is qualified in first aid, CPR and administration of medications.

 

In 2016 she was appointed the Care Manager position and in 2019 became a Company Director but is still actively involved in resident’s person-centred care planning and safety and is always available to attend to the residents needs on a daily basis.

 

Kelly is very family orientated, she has two children of her own.

In her spare time Kelly enjoys yoga, she is a keen animal lover and dotes on her fur-baby Charlie who is a chocolate lab.

Noemia Pestana

Noemia Pestana

Deputy Care Manager

 

Noemia was born in Maderia and moved to Guernsey in 1997. She joined the Company in 2002. She achieved her edexcel level 3 in Health and Social Care (Adults) qualification.

 

Noemia has many qualities which she brings to the team due to her 20 years’ experience. She was appointed Deputy Care Manager in 2016. She holds her level 2 Food hygiene certificate and is responsible for cooking and overseeing quality assurance on the catering side as well as overseeing safe working practice within the home and care of our residents.

 

Noemia is a very practical person who works to a high standard. She is qualified in First aid, CPR and medication administration.

 

Outside of work Noemia has two young children, she enjoys socialising and is a chef de cuisine for her family and friends.

Melissa Toll

Senior Carer

 

Melissa is Guernsey born. She joined the Company in 2011.

 

She has achieved her edexcel level 2 NVQ award in Health and Social Care (Adults) and her edexcel level 3 NVQ in Health and Social Care (Adults). Melissa has a keen interest in Mental Health and Dementia and is a qualified Mental Health First aider since 2020. She is qualified in first aid, CPR and the administration of medication.

 

Melissa has always been a highly driven enthusiastic learner and is responsible for administration, person-centred care planning. Her positive solution focused approach and attention to detail means she is a well-respected advocate for our residents who can approach her about any problems they may have.

 

Melissa has two young children which keep her active outside of work.

Her hobbies are taken up by her children’s hobbies, but she would not want it any other way.

Jenny Nichols

Administrator

 

Jenny was born in Guernsey but spent her childhood years in Adelaide, South Australia. On her return to the Island Jenny undertook training at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and worked for several years as a State Enrolled Nurse.

 

After having her two children, Jenny decided on a change of direction and attended the College of Further Education, where she gained several secretarial and administrative qualifications. Before moving to Maison De Beauvoir in June 2020 Jenny worked in high level administrative roles within the States of Guernsey.

 

Jenny joined the Home as part-time Receptionist. She now works as an Administrator, supporting the Senior Management Team with staffing matters and also providing non-clinical administrative support to the Care Manager. In her spare time Jenny enjoys being with her family, reading, theatre and live music events. She also enjoys wining and dining so tries to walk regularly to ward off the effects of these!

Emma is a qualified Music Teacher as well as having an HNC in Business & Finance. She joined Guernsey Care Homes in 2015, after being a self-employed peripatetic music teacher for 20 years. This was a bit of a change in direction for her, but has proved to be a good decision.


She started with Guernsey Care Homes at the same time that they took over Hermanus Retirement Home in July 2015. The Home was renamed Maison de Beauvoir – and it has gone from strength to strength in that time.


“I have really enjoyed being a part of this new initiative… I have watched the Home blossom and become the place it is today. It’s been an exciting and challenging time – especially with recent events, but I have never regretted my decision to become part of this Team.” Emma is married and has a son, George, who is currently living and studying in Australia.
