We at Summerland House aim to give a holistic, personalised approach to care, to ensure our residents are happy and able to lead as normal a life as possible. We want to promote a friendly, supportive, family atmosphere where each day matters, friendships are promoted, freedom to express emotions and beliefs is given and contact and involvement with the community is maintained and relative involvement in care is encouraged and promoted.
What you can expect from us: We want to value individual personalities and appreciate family dynamics, be non-judgemental in our approach and respectful of cultural differences, be tolerant, adaptable and trustworthy. You can expect to receive care from kind, friendly, positive staff, who will offer compassion, tenderness, empathise and listen to concerns, hopes and fears. We aim to be giving of our time and flexible in our approach.
Our residents have told us they wish to feel secure in their environment and be happy, to be occupied and have a choice in how they spend their day, to have company when wanted and privacy when they do not. Most of all to feel valued for who they are.
In order to provide this care, we need to value our staff and aim to look after one another, promote and facilitate training of all our staff, be tolerant of each other and respectful of differences, to offer pastoral care and encourage staff to be the best they can be. We appreciate that as a large home, we will face challenges, but we will endeavour to face these with professionalism and good humour, promoting a happy working atmosphere.
We pride ourselves on having a high ratio of staff to residents, comprising of experienced Qualified Nurses, Health Care Assistants and a very stable team of care staff; all designed to ensure our residents have the very highest standard of care available. As a Nursing Home registered by the Health & Social Care we are properly equipped to cater for all categories of resident ranging from long term care for the elderly to short stay respite and convalescence. We are the only Registered Nursing Home Association (RNHA) nursing home in the island and we have consistently matched up to their exacting standards.
We place the highest importance on staff training and have an active NVQ programme with several qualified assessors. Our in house training officer conducts regular training sessions for all staff to ensure they are kept up to date with their practice. So you can be assured of the quality of care. Most importantly, our home has a relaxed, homely atmosphere, which is often remarked upon. We look after families as much as we do our residents; we understand the difficulties people face when moving into a care setting and you will always be made to feel welcome and included in any decision making.
In all our years of trading we also pride ourselves that no resident has ever had to leave our home due to financial reasons. Residents receiving treatment from specialist consultant may be eligible to claim the cost of accommodation from B.U.P.A, P.P.P and other recognised private insurance schemes. We have several ‘Friends of Summerland’; our visiting Chaplain provides regular non-denominational services and support for families when needed. We have several people who attend weekly to support our activity team in various guises, from helping at Bingo sessions to playing the piano. We regularly have students from schools and colleges and the benefits are on both sides. We value the support these people give us and it helps us to engage with the community as a whole.
Our experienced management team has operated high class Nursing Homes in Southern England and Guernsey for nearly 35 years, enjoying a high reputation for our standard of care. We want you to feel confident and secure in your surroundings, make new friends to enable you to enjoy your life, regardless of your situation. We promise to care for you to the very best of our ability and will go the extra mile to make this happen.
